This is a working fishing resort that takes rigs and tents, rather than a parking lot with hookups. The stocked family water is out front, the wild canyon below Hangman's Bridge is a mile downstream, and the store at the gate carries fishing gear, firewood, propane and ice. Beside the store, the pavilion — long tables under the pines, grills and a fish-cleaning station on its covered patio — is open to everyone on the property. The people at the counter can usually tell you where the fish truck stopped this week; if you'd rather not ask, the alert list on the fishing page will email you when the state posts a plant.

The two areas are genuinely different, and it is worth picking on purpose. The fifteen spaces up top have full hookups — 20/30/50-amp power, water and sewer — take big rigs, and sit near the restroom building, whose showers are free and need no key. The eleven riverside sites sit right on the East Fork with no hookups at all; tents and self-contained RVs are both welcome down there, everyone on the river pays the same rate, and the water is close enough to hear all night. Site 4 comes with its own conversation piece: the ridge straight across the water is the one from the sasquatch videos.
A few things worth knowing before you point the rig up Highway 89. The resort is at about 5,530 feet, two and a half miles south of Markleeville, and it is the last store and services before Monitor Pass — nights run cold here even in midsummer. There is free Wi-Fi and no cell reception at all: no carrier gets a signal on this ground, so download your maps and directions before you leave the valley. Sites turn over at noon, in and out. The dump station is $25 a dump, water fill-ups run on donations, and firewood is $12 a bag at the counter.
