Getting here

The resort sits on Highway 89 between Markleeville and the Highway 4/89 junction at the foot of Monitor Pass. From the north, come through Woodfords on 88/89 — that is the all-season route, and the one to use if you are unsure. Monitor and Ebbetts both close behind gates with the snow, typically November into May, so for half the year the county is reached from the north only. Past our driveway the pavement forks and starts climbing, which is a plain way of saying we are the last store and services before either pass.

Seasons at altitude

Markleeville's numbers, so you can pack from them: January days average around 46°F with nights around 17°F; July runs about 84°F days and 43°F nights; the area sees roughly 83 inches of snow a year, and the record spread runs −25°F to 102°F. The figure that catches people out is the July night — it is cold at this elevation in every month of the year, and a warm afternoon by the water says nothing about what nine o'clock will do. Spring runoff, May into June, is the river's big annual event: high, fast and cold, and worth seeing even if it is not worth wading.

The store

Basic dry goods, beer and wine, ice cream, fishing supplies, cold drinks, snacks, and the cooking things you meant to pack. Firewood is $12 a bag; propane is sold at the counter — ask for the price. The dump station is $25 a dump, campsite guests included, water fill-ups run on donations, and a shower without a stay is $20. The current CDFW regulations booklet lives by the register, and if you have a question the booklet does not answer, ask anyway: somebody behind the counter fished this river this week. Wi-Fi and cell

Two facts, so you can stop wondering: the resort has free Wi-Fi, and there is zero cell reception — no bars, no carrier, no "usually works by the bridge." We would rather tell you now than have you find out in the driveway. Download your maps and directions before you leave a town that has signal, and let the Wi-Fi handle whatever cannot wait. Dogs

Dogs are welcome everywhere on the property. A cabin carries $30 flat, once, however many come along — a cleaning fee, because the room has to be turned over after. The campsites and the RV row take dogs at no charge. The rest of the house policy is on the dogs page.
